It seems at first that these simple activities of a single Christmas season are the “Christmas memory” of the story’s title. The narrator recalls these events as happening “more than twenty years ago.” On one level, there is very little to the story: Buddy and his cousin make 31 fruitcakes to give to friends they chop down and decorate a Christmas tree they exchange homemade gifts on Christmas morning. The other Buddy died in the 1880’s, when she was still a child. She calls me Buddy, in memory of a boy who was formerly her best friend. The stories are autobiographical, inspired by his childhood among mother’s relatives in Monroeville, Alabama, where he had been sent as a toddler after his parents’ divorce.Ī Christmas Memory, the best of these three, is luminous with the friendship between the then-seven-year-old narrator and his elderly, intellectually disabled, cousin: So it may be a surprise to many to learn that Capote wrote three holiday stories, A Christmas Memory, One Christmas, and The Thanksgiving Visitor. Truman Capote today is most remembered for his horrifying true-crime novel In Cold Blood and tale of modern rootlessness in Breakfast at Tiffany’s (unlike the movie, Capote’s novella does not end happily). Truman Capote’s short story, “A Christmas Memory,” meditates on the role of memory around the holidays.

For example, the Bananas are not a minor league team, and they never have been. This year, the Bananas are leaning into their unique interpretation of America’s pastime more than ever before, making it increasingly difficult to describe the team’s identity within professional baseball in just a single word or phrase. … I love how open people are, telling you their stories about how much the Bananas have meant to them.” “ was a no-brainer.” When Higgins spoke to the Guardian, he had only been with the team for eight days. “For the first time ever, I saw fans on their phones during the game,” says pitcher Connor Higgins. A key early Rogue Trooper artist, he has also drawn Batman/Judge Dredd: Vendetta in Gotham, Judge Dredd, Tharg the Mighty, Tharg’s Future Shocks, and The V.C.’s. Co-creator of both Judge Anderson and The Kleggs, Bolland’s highly detailed style unfortunately precluded him from doing many sequential strips - although he found the time to pencil both Camelot 3000 and Batman: The Killing Joke for DC Comics.Ĭam Kennedy is another hugely popular 2000 AD artist, having illustrated many Judge Dredd strips and co-created luckless wannabe creator Kenny Who? and the Taxidermist. Perhaps the most popular 2000 AD artist of all time, Brian Bolland’s clean-line style and meticulous attention to detail ensure that his artwork on strips including Dan Dare, Future Shocks, Judge Dredd and Walter the Wobot looks as fresh today as it did when first published. Outside of 2000 AD his credits include Star Wars, Lobo, The Punisher and the critically acclaimed A History of Violence. His creations include Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog, Ace Trucking, Al’s Baby, Button Man and Mean Machine. John Wagner has been scripting for 2000 AD for more years than he cares to remember. He drew landscapes and buildings, and one day drew a picture of his cat, Pete, and began to make a living doing that. He was an electrical engineer for a while, but then quit to be an artist. James watched his father, a self-taught artist, and grew up drawing Snoopy and Yogi Bear. James didn’t start out to write children’s books, and Pete wasn’t his first four-legged drawing buddy. One of the first books he fell in love with was Treasure Island, which is still one of his favorite books. James said his parents didn’t buy him a lot of children’s books. She loved the Trixie Belden and Nancy Drew mysteries because she loved pretending she was a detective. Kimberly fell in love with books from the moment she could read, a love she inherited from her dad. When Kimberly and James realized they loved to read Meet The New York Times bestselling couple behind the unflappable cat that has been getting Georgia reading for years. James and Kimberly sat down at their kitchen table in 2004 to tell Pete’s story, together. James never saw Pete again, but he continued to paint his furry pal-in blue, because he heard that people thought black cats were bad luck. James adopted a scrawny black kitten in 1991, and a year later, that fun-lovin’ cat with itchy paws, stepped out and kept on truckin’. Pete may be a national treasure among teachers and students across the country, but here in Georgia we get to claim him as our own adopted pet. |
